Hellebore, also known as the Christmas Rose, brings an otherworldly beauty to the otherwise frozen skeleton of my winter garden. It resides in the shadows of my acer tree in the summer but comes into its own over the winter. Highly toxic and poisonous, the Hellebore has a dark and mysterious reputation. In ancient times, it was believed to have the power to ward off evil spirits, but due to its poisonous nature, it was also greatly feared and used sparingly in medicinal and magical practices. Protective talisman and potent poison, a powerful combination that must be handled wisely.

In this painting, the hellebore is wrapped delicately in sparkling spiderweb. Could this be an attempt to create a barrier to anyone who may encounter it? How tempting and enticing for young fairies who may not be aware of the dangers. Can they possibly resist something so beautiful, powerful and spellbinding?
